fractured

Have you ever wondered, dear reader, why all the angels one meets are hurt in some fundamental way? Ever wondered why their eyes are so sad, why their halos are so bright, every feather of their wings a sharp blade?

It isn’t a coincidence. The process by which a halo is bound to an angel-to-be is not a kind one. For all the might of the Powers that forge halos, they cannot be bound to an unblemished soul. The barriers around souls are powerful things indeed, and they are quite inviolable under normal circumstances. They have to be…fractured, wounded in some way, before it becomes possible for a halo to be bound to an unfortunate soul.

They are all broken, dear reader, because they must be. There are no intact angels. An intact soul has no opening for a halo to worm its way into. They are all, every last one, fractured by one horror or another, and in the fractures in their minds come their halos, twisting them until they live for the Purpose that their halos carry, until they can’t possibly dream of being any different, even as they hate what has been done to them.

The Powers that made the halos are well aware of this. They either do not care, see it as an acceptable cost…or designed the halos this way. Take care, dear reader, to not draw their attention, lest they take a…personal interest in seeing you become theirs.
